"Tripped" is a song performed by American actress and singer Victoria Justice, co-written with Grant Knoche and Tayler Buono. It was released as a single on February 13, 2024.[1]

Background and release[]

As 2024 began, Victoria Justice announced the release of new songs throughout the year. On her Instagram broadcast channel, the Justice League, the singer alluded to the theme of her upcoming song by sharing various photos that included red hearts, people tripping, and shoes.[2] She also made a post on YouTube with similar images and the caption "What does it all mean..."[3] On February 9, Justice posted a video with a modified snippet of the song on her social media, writing "coming soon".[4] Later that day, she announced the song would be titled "Tripped" and released on February 13.[5]

The cover artwork, created by Daniel Poplawsky, who also photographed Justice for the cover of her previous solo single "Only a Stranger", was revealed the day before the song's release. It features legs with shoes sticking out from behind a red curtain, on which the light falls, with the single's title and the singer's name written on it.[6] Justice later posted the original cover artwork idea, which depicted her falling in the sky and holding a red heart-shaped balloon.[7] According to the single's official credits, Justice co-wrote the song with Grant Knoche and Tayler Buono. On the same day as the song was released, Justice uploaded a lyric video on her YouTube channel.

Justice wrote about the inspiration for writing this song under one of her TikTok videos: "I wrote this at a time in my life when I was unexpectedly having these feelings even though a part of me wanted to resist all the lovey dovey's. You never know when you're going to trip & fall for someone unexpected." She also revealed it was mixed and mastered by VA Sam.[8] At the end of the month, the singer uploaded a video on YouTube named "The Story Behind the Music", in which she briefly talked about the song. When asked if she learned anything about falling in love while writing the song, she replied that she "just wanted to like capture the feeling of like resisting it, but giving in anyway, because this person just makes you feel so good". The following month, Justice revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter the song was about "reluctantly sort of falling in love" and garnered positive feedback from her fans.

The next month, the singer published a piece of recording that appears to be a demo of the song, with the file listed as "(With 'I've Fallen)". This version has a different ending with Justice shouting "Help, I've fallen and I can't get up, haha". In a YouTube comment on the posted video, Justice revealed she "had fun with the ending" while recording the song and "was so torn" about whether the ending should remain in the final version.

Lyrics[]

[Verse 1]
I think I'm going insane
'Cause three words are spilling out (hah-ah)
Can't hear the thoughts in my brain
'Cause my heart's beating too loud (hah-ah)

[Pre-chorus]
It's like I wanna hold you, but I'm holding back
I think it's kinda sexy when you make me laugh
But then I'm pushing you away (pushing you away)
I say I don't need you, but I'm back for more
And then we're making out on my kitchen floor
I'm not used to all these feelings
So I'm running from my feelings, how'd I—

[Chorus]
Trip into this
Fall for your kiss
Slipped on your lips
Didn't see it coming, I just
Tripped into this
Tried to resist
Losing my grip
Swear that I'm not falling, I just
Tri-tri-tripped
Oops, I
Tri-tri-tripped

[Verse 2]
Who gave you the right
To look at me like you do? (hah-ah)
Got shooting stars in my eyes
And my body's on the moon (hah-ah)

[Pre-chorus]
There's a gravity that's pulling me to you (ooh)
But if I let you win I got a lot to lose (ooh)
Ooh-ooh, ah
I should probably leavе before I want you more (ooh)
But instеad I'm naked on your bedroom floor (ooh)
I'm not used to all these feelings
So I'm running from my feelings, how'd I—

[Chorus]
Trip into this
Fall for your kiss
Slipped on your lips
Didn't see it coming, I just
Tripped into this
Tried to resist
Losing my grip
Swear that I'm not falling, I just
Tri-tri-tripped
Oops, I
Tri-tri-tripped

[Bridge]
Trippin' on you (on you, hmm)
On you
How'd I go from kissin' to missin' you?
Double dipping, 'cause you're so good at listening
I'm back for more, my guard is stripping down
Oh my god, hat have you done?
Threw off my equilibrium
I'm terrified to fall in love
But here I go committing (hahahahah)
How'd I—

[Chorus]
Trip into this
Fall for your kiss (ah)
Slipped on your lips
Didn't see it coming, I just (oh)
Tripped into this
Tried to resist (oh-oh)
Losing my grip
Swear that I'm not falling, I just
Tri-tri-tripped
Oops, I
Tripped (ah-ah-ah)
Tri-tri-tripped (oh-oh)
Oops, I
Tri-tri-tripped
Oops, I
Tri-tri-tri-tri-tri-tri-tripped
