"Hate the World Without U (Maddy's Song)" (stylized in all lowercase) is a song performed by American actress and singer Victoria Justice, co-written with Tayler Buono and its producer Grant Knoche. It was released as a single on May 24, 2024.[1]

Background and release[]

Victoria Justice released her previous single "Raw" on April 19, 2024. While promoting the single in later published interviews, the singer has already started revealing information about her next songs. In an MTV video "20 Questions for 2024", Justice said she was excited about the upcoming song, calling it "a bit more personal" and "really, really special" to her.[2] Jazmine Hughes, who interviewed the singer for Marie Claire magazine, revealed Justice and Toby Gad played a different song for her than "Raw", which was unfinished at the time of the interview and was scheduled for release in the summer; it was later proven it was yet another new single, "Down".[3]

On May 23, Justice posted a video of herself in a car playing a music file on her phone, teasing a new song in the same way she did for the first time with "Raw", released only about a month earlier. Posting this video, she revealed she would release this song the next day. The single was released that day as planned, titled "Hate the World Without U (Maddy's Song)", with cover art depicting the singer and her younger half-sister Madison Reed during their childhood.[1] The lyric video for the song was published on the same day on Justice's YouTube channel.

In her social media post, Justice dedicated the song to her half-sister, whom she considers her best friend, as her early birthday gift (Reed celebrates her birthday four days later, on May 28). Justice considered the song to be her "most special and personal song" ever released in her career. She also revealed she had kept the song a secret from her half-sister for two or more years, implying she wrote it in 2022 or earlier, which she herself found surprising. While the single's official credits on music platforms confirm Justice co-wrote it with Grant Knoche and Tayler Buono, in this post she revealed Knoche also produced it, while VA Sam was responsible for the mastering.[4] In June 2024, Justice posted videos of her and Reed sitting in a car, and Reed listening to the song for the first time; the two broke down in tears and hugged several times, with Reed ultimately calling the song "beautiful" and Justice "the best big sis ever".

Lyrics[]

[Intro]
Are you happy to see the baby?
How do you feel about your new baby sister?
Uhm, I'm flabbergasted
You're flabbergasted?
Flabbergasted! Ahahah

[Verse 1]
From the very first time that I met you
I knew I would have a friend for life
Was only three years old, but still remember when I held you
And looked into those brown wild eyes
From stealin' cars and sneakin' out past curfew
To stealin' clothes and causin' stupid fights
I know you know we both got our issues, but there's no one else that I
Want by my side

[Chorus]
Sеasons come and go so fast
Time is flyin' by, I keep on lookin' back
In case I havеn't told you
I would hate the world without you
So if someday everything's completely changed
I promise you we'll always stay the same
(Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh, ah)
(Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh)

[Verse 2]
Don't know where the road ahead will lead us
Maybe meet a man and settle down
We'll raise our kids together with the same kind of love mom did
She built us on solid ground
I think about her and dad gettin' older
But if I think too much, it makes me cry
No matter what, you'll always have my shoulder, you can lean on
Through the cold and lonely nights

[Chorus]
Seasons come and go so fast
Time is flyin' by, I keep on lookin' back
In case I haven't told you
I would hate the world without you
So if someday everything's completely changed
I promise you we'll always stay

[Bridge]
All those growin' pains and broken hearts
And chasin' dreams, scared of the dark, yeah (oh-oh-oh)
Those drunken nights and dumb tattoos
And midnight drives, "Get out my room", yeah (oh-oh-oh)
From "I'm so annoyed" to your "My best friend"
We scream and fight and then laugh again (oh-oh-oh)
You should know
There's not a single thing I would change
(Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh, ah)
(Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh)

[Chorus]
In case I haven't told you
I would hate the world without you
(Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh)
So if someday everything's completely changed
(Ooh-ooh-ooh)
I promise you we'll always stay

[Outro]
Victoria, say "Hi" to Madison
Hi, Madison
Isn't she beautiful? She really is
